臣昨受詔,值便东行,承至优渥,竭愚忠之心,敢奉表以闻:臣自蒙拜丞相,岁久躬行节义之事,辄思沟壑,兴利除弊。伏箴陈之日,所陈虽微,而其效颇著。乃一朝内外大欢,而臣独以愧纩自沮,各以蒲扇心之者数人,而臣独以持橐肃面之。臣所为者,计深远者也。今四方未定,盗贼蜂起,而国以年多疲弊,甲兵既新,备器器械不完,国人弥足,而欲以此少年之主,托大事于非常之日,臣竊为皇上自惜,为陛下忧。然臣以为陛下当以仁、义、礼、智、信为先,而后可以宽大。今直欲与奸人笼络同党,以敷兵革之役,此非所以纾民间之困,除平定四方之急,破千古之常也。臣有土地千里之半,人民无违忤之心,刚柔简易之数,储蓄充盈之计,没有防备之患,然后自以为可以与人超群,与国无忧。若欲假借他人之力,自躬不修之德,强求而得之功,岂不自招败亡之道哉!

今者天下大乱,非常之时,陛下必须自照前理,修文衮之雅,已审己之过,澄清宫省之弊,特设司礼监,各官贵人,务必严肃诸司事,并减弱巨室权要,使同气连枝之人,无得相因依附,外藩虽有异心,而内难彼此支应。而后包露有恒,敌可离心也。乱时反正,不以群情顺逆而决,误国害民之难也。凡事務求功之实,而后可以成事,不图后效,而先追名利,所得无益,而所失有余,圣人所不为也。

臣昨夜梦至宣德社中,见二神人,问之所以见神,答曰:吾躬将百万少年之命备天下之难,以成陛下之业,夙夜忧虑,恐非圣制所向,故特来相助耳。臣驰觉,遂书奉表闻之。愿陛下托臣以讨賊捍边之任,如臣之于躬不赀,许之以万死,无或难也。然而臣惟一人耳,才昧平生,阙于用官。现今但愿陛下勿以臣之远,鲜于事要,抑制士卒,负才任不当,以妄自菲薄,引笑话于人云尔。

愿陛下托臣以讨賊捍边之任,此臣之肺腑,所共身涂炭之志也。愿陛下慎重图之,勿使蒙皇祖之灵,为小人所惑,以成败之祸,使成就愿盼,而感此役于永载忠肝耳。
