High School English Teaching Design

Introduction:

In this teaching design, we will focus on developing high school students' listening and speaking skills in English. The lessons will involve various interactive activities to engage students and create opportunities for language practice. By the end of the module, students should be able to understand and respond appropriately in everyday conversational contexts.

Section 1: Building Vocabulary

Objective:

The objective of this section is to build students' vocabulary related to common topics in their daily lives.

Lesson Plan:

Title: My Daily Routine

Duration: 2 class periods

Materials: Pictures depicting daily activities, Flashcards with corresponding vocabulary words

Procedure:

Step 1: Begin the lesson by showing pictures of different daily activities on the board. Ask students to name each activity in English. This will serve as a warm-up activity and help activate their prior knowledge.

Step 2: Introduce the flashcards with the vocabulary words related to daily activities. Show each flashcard and pronounce the corresponding word clearly. Have the students repeat the words after you, focusing on correct pronunciation and stress.

Step 3: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Distribute the flashcards randomly among the students. In their groups, students should take turns showing their flashcards to their partners and describing the activity. Encourage them to use the vocabulary words they have learned.

Step 4: As a class, discuss the different activities students mentioned. Engage them in a conversation about their daily routines and preferences.

Extension Activities:

1. Vocabulary Quiz: Prepare a vocabulary quiz using the flashcards. Give each student a set of flashcards and ask them to write the corresponding words on a sheet of paper. This will help reinforce their understanding of the vocabulary.

2. Role Play: Divide the class into pairs or small groups and assign each group a different scenario related to daily activities. Have students create dialogues using the vocabulary words they have learned and perform them in front of the class.

Section 2: Listening Comprehension

Objective:

The objective of this section is to improve students' listening comprehension skills by exposing them to different types of audio recordings.

Lesson Plan:

Title: Daily News Update

Duration: 3 class periods

Materials: Audio recordings of news updates, Worksheets with comprehension questions

Procedure:

Step 1: Provide students with a brief overview of the news topics covered in the audio recordings. Explain any unfamiliar vocabulary to ensure comprehension.

Step 2: Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Distribute the worksheets with comprehension questions related to the news updates. Instruct students to listen to the audio recordings and answer the questions as they listen.

Step 3: After listening to the audio recordings, encourage students to discuss their answers in their groups. Monitor their discussions and provide assistance as needed.

Step 4: Bring the class together for a whole-group discussion. Ask students to share their answers and thoughts on the news updates. This will allow for further practice in speaking and expressing opinions.

Extension Activities:

1. Debate: Assign students different roles and have them engage in a debate based on one of the news topics. Encourage them to express their opinions and support their arguments using evidence from the news updates.

2. News Presentation: In pairs or small groups, have students create their own news updates and present them to the class. This will provide them with an opportunity to practice their listening, speaking, and presentation skills simultaneously.

Section 3: Speaking Practice

Objective:

The objective of this section is to provide students with ample speaking practice opportunities to enhance their fluency and confidence in English.

Lesson Plan:

Title: In My Opinion

Duration: 2 class periods

Materials: Topic cards with prompts for discussion

Procedure:

Step 1: Introduce the topic cards with prompts for discussion. Inform students that they will be sharing their opinions on various topics.

Step 2: Divide the students into pairs or small groups. Give each group a topic card and instruct them to discuss the given topic. Encourage students to express their opinions and explain their reasoning.

Step 3: Rotate the topic cards among the groups, allowing them to discuss multiple topics within the given time frame.

Step 4: Conduct a whole-class discussion, inviting students to share interesting points raised during their group discussions. Encourage active listening and respectful responses.

Extension Activities:

1. Debate Competition: Organize a debate competition based on the topics discussed in the previous activity. Divide the class into teams and assign roles such as debaters and judges.

2. Opinion Writing: Ask students to choose one of the topics discussed and write an opinion essay sharing their viewpoints. This will help develop their writing skills while reinforcing the concepts covered in the speaking activities.

Conclusion:

Through this teaching design, high school students will have the opportunity to enhance their listening and speaking skills in English. By incorporating vocabulary building, listening comprehension exercises, and ample speaking practice, students will become more confident and proficient in using English in everyday conversations.
